The Story of FUGLEN and Its Journey to Tokyo

FUGLEN — meaning "bird" in Norwegian — embodies the spirit of exploration and connection. Inspired by the Arctic tern, the migratory bird in our logo that travels the longest distance in the world, we at FUGLEN dream of living like the tern: stopping in port cities around the globe, absorbing their unique energies, and carrying those experiences forward.

In 2012, our journey brought us to Tokyo. Like a migratory bird finding a vibrant new shore, we opened FUGLEN TOKYO in the lively neighborhood of Shibuya — our first overseas branch. It was here that we introduced Japan to the original taste and atmosphere of FUGLEN OSLO: a space where timeless design, community, and coffee meet.

Building on this spirit, we opened FUGLEN ASAKUSA in 2018, near the historic Senso-ji Temple. Asakusa is a rare place where Japan’s traditional culture still thrives amid a growing wave of modern creativity. Here, alongside temples and Showa-era architecture from the 1950s and 60s, a new energy of innovation is taking root — making it the perfect home for FUGLEN's philosophy of blending heritage and new beginnings.

Just like in Oslo, visitors to FUGLEN ASAKUSA are welcomed into a warm, nostalgic atmosphere, as if the café had always been part of the neighborhood's story.

In 2014, we deepened our roots in Japan by founding FUGLEN COFFEE ROASTERS, where we bring the spirit of the Nordic roast to life. Our roasting approach — lightly roasting to highlight coffee’s natural fruity flavors, floral aromas, and a clean, sweet aftertaste — remains true to the Oslo tradition while evolving through continuous research in Japan.

At FUGLEN, whether in Oslo, Shibuya, or Asakusa, we invite you to pause, savor, and share in the energy of places and people — just like a migratory bird on its endless journey.
