SPD vs SPD-SL: Which Shimano Clipless Pedals Should You Buy?

Shimano makes two completely different clipless systems, and the names are one letter apart. Cleats, shoes and pedals do not mix between them, so let's clear it up before you buy.

The short version

  • SPD (two-bolt, small metal cleat) — mountain, gravel, touring and commuting. The cleat recesses into the shoe sole, so you can walk normally. Most SPD pedals are double-sided: stomp and go.
  • SPD-SL (three-bolt, large plastic cleat) — road riding. A wide platform for maximum pedaling efficiency, single-sided entry, and a cleat that protrudes — fine for espresso stops, awkward for real walking.

Choose SPD if…

…you ride trails, tour, commute, or simply want to walk like a human being at the coffee shop. Our favorites, all with cleats included:

  • PD-M520 — the legendary entry point; durable, rebuildable, cheap to love
  • PD-M540 — lighter body, same reliability, great XC value
  • Deore XT PD-M8100 — the XC benchmark; XT PD-M8120 adds a cage for trail/enduro support
  • XTR PD-M9100 — race weight, adjustable bearings, the best Shimano makes
  • PD-EH500 / PD-T421 — dual-platform: SPD one side, flat the other, perfect for commuters

Choose SPD-SL if…

…you ride road and want the most efficient, stable connection to the bike:

  • PD-RS500 — easygoing entry to SPD-SL, wide platform, light action
  • 105 PD-R7000 — carbon body, the value pick of the range
  • Ultegra PD-R8000 — lighter, lower stack, race-day feel without the race-day price
  • Dura-Ace PD-R9100 — the pro-peloton standard

Cleat cheat-sheet

  • SPD cleats: SM-SH51 (release by twisting out — the default) or SM-SH56 (multi-release)
  • SPD-SL cleats: SH11 yellow (6° float — most riders), SH12 blue (2°), SH10 red (fixed)
  • Shoes: SPD needs a 2-bolt sole; SPD-SL needs a 3-bolt road sole
